Admissions

Cobblestone's admissions process involves informal assessments rather than testing. Generally, children entering Pre-Kindergarten or Kindergarten are interviewed by the School's Director, while those applying at higher grade levels are interviewed by the teachers at that age group.

Children entering beyond Kindergarten are given a reading assessment through the use of a running record and share their conceptual understanding of mathematics through discussion with teachers and by using math manipulatives. These children are also asked to write a short passage, if appropriate. Otherwise, teachers will offer a short dictation for the child to translate, using phonetic spelling.

Parents of prospective students are encouraged to visit while the school is in session. Prospective students ages 6 and up can spend a half-day visiting the school as participants. This visit affords teachers an opportunity to observe the child's level of comfort participating in the Cobblestone community and affords the prospective student a first-hand experience of the school's expectations.

As part of the interview process, the school requests documentation of all previous schooling. In some instances, children are referred for testing to identify learning styles and needs, and to determine whether Cobblestone is the best fit for that student.
