Intermediate Grades

Students at the Intermediate level (ages 8-10, grades 3 and 4) continue to build on and acquire skills that have been previously taught in the lower grades. Teachers support the children as they develop the skills and habits of making choices, staying focused, and working independently. The teachers strive to work with each child at his or her instructional level teaching them the academic skills required at each developmental stage.

Children begin the year with questions. As a group, we discover which areas our curiosities will lead us. Our learning is varied and developed using a multi-faceted approach. Learning may include a trip to the RMSC to discover how the Finger Lakes were formed, an orienteering expedition to use our map skills, a trip to the Public Market to promote a better understanding of money, or a trip to the Memorial Art Gallery to notice differences among art pieces from around the world.

Teachers facilitate students through the research process during the year. Students are then given the opportunity to pursue their individual interests during independent research projects toward the end of the year. Questions pursued have included Why are so many things made in China?, How did video games begin?, and Who were the female rulers of ancient Egypt? Research presentations consist of posters, verbal presentations, models, and/or Power Point presentations.

The Intermediate Grades experience is further enhanced by our Music, P.E., Art, and Spanish programs.
