Middle Grades

Cobblestone's Middle Grades (ages 10-12, grades 5 and 6) students study more challenging language arts, science, and math curricula as they hone their critical thinking skills and prepare to graduate from Cobblestone. Students in these grades also experience much of their learning directly in the Rochester community. They utilize cultural institutions, such as the Rochester Museum and Science Center, the Memorial Art Gallery, the Rundel Library, and others. They participate in Service Learning projects that allow students to immediately see the relevance of their classroom studies and apply that learning in the "real world".

As in the lower grades, teachers continue to weave the acquisition of skills and knowledge into contexts meaningful to their students' emerging capacities as critical thinkers. Research strategies and techniques continue to be developed in a larger capacity. Some students may work independently in certain subjects, pursuing interests in math, science or the arts beyond the range of a typical middle school program.

The Middle Grades students also continue their studies with P.E., Music, Art, and Spanish in more depth. All of their experiences provide a springboard to conversations regarding students' current lives and an increased sense of their own possibilities.
