Upper Primary Group

Upper Primary Group (ages 6-8, grades 1 and 2) teachers encourage students to embrace reading and writing as a means of expression. Teachers place both reading and writing in context for children each day during discussion group, whose rich stimulating context is derived in large part from the children’s own questions.

Together, teachers and students listen to, read and create books, stories, folktales and poems. Children engage in hands-on math and science and express their learning in math and science through reading and writing as well.

Students are introduced to research skills, such as creating a web to see the connections between their questions and gathering information from different sources. Learning culminates in research fairs where children have the experience of teaching other students in the school.

Literature groups, featuring stories and books of different complexity, challenge the wide spectrum of readers at this level. The Upper Primary experience is further enhanced by our Music, P.E., Art, and Spanish programs.
