Academics: Overview

The heart of the difference between Cobblestone and other schools is its unique curriculum. A theme approach is used with the integration of subject areas, skills and content. Themes for study combine reading, writing, math, social studies, scientific inquiry, foreign language and artistic expression that evolve out of children’s questions, interests and experiences. The more relevant that topics are to students' lives, the more engaged the students become. In addition to the core subjects of reading, writing, math, and science, the school offers weekly classes in art, music, Spanish, creative movement, and physical education.

Low student to teacher ratios (approximately 12:1) allows our faculty to accommodate students' learning strengths by teaching to multiple learning styles. Our teachers work in teams, freeing teachers for coaching, assessing, and conferencing. Students help each other to learn in a cooperative atmosphere that promotes risk-taking. Mistakes are expected and accepted; reflecting on them generates further learning. Teachers create a balanced learning environment wherein children are engaged and challenged and yet allowed to progress as individuals, each child different from the next.

Education research demonstrates that engaged students experience greater satisfaction with school experiences. Research also shows that teachers should underscore the relevance of classroom instruction to students' personal lives and future aspirations. It is as important for children to develop their passions, to cultivate a full engagement in some aspect of their world, as it is for them to be encouraged to learn what teachers or society deems necessary. If they cultivate and experience their own intrinsic motivation and interest, children will be more likely to learn whatever it is they might need and also to live a full and engaged life. At Cobblestone, this is what we want for our children.

At Cobblestone, our student-responsive, interdisciplinary approach to learning through inquiry encourages critical thinking and fosters motivation, anchoring learning in a meaningful context. Cobblestone students are confident, curious and able to advocate for themselves. Our students are extremely well prepared for academic success as they transition into high school to university and beyond.
